Harsh Weather – Weighing the Risks for a Roof

Certain weather conditions can take a toll on a vulnerable roof. Some conditions could even compromise a healthy roofing system. Here are five furious threats that every homeowner should be aware of.

Rain

Rain is only a threat when a roof has been compromised. A compromised roof will have cracks, and cracks will allow water to reach the decking, which is made of wood. If water makes its way here, the decking could rot, and water will eventually make its way inside of a home.

Wind

Wind is dangerous alone, but it poses a bigger threat when it’s combined with rain. Technically, wind comes in different forms. The less powerful winds are produced during severe rainstorms. These gusts can reach up to 57 mph or higher. Tropical storms fall in second place. They can produce winds that can reach up to 73 mph. Hurricane winds are the most dangerous. The winds from a category one and a category two hurricane can tear the shingles directly off a roof, and the winds from a category three, four, or five hurricane can tear a home apart.

Ice

Ice does not pose an immediate threat on a roof. However, if it remains on a roof for far too long, ice dams will begin to form in certain areas. As these dams melt, they will create moisture, and this moisture can lead to wood rot.

Wood rot is not the only issue here. Ice dam can also create ice icicles. Not only are icicles unattractive, but they can hurt someone if they fall to the ground.

Heat

Asphalt shingles are vulnerable to extreme heat. If they get too hot, they will start to expand and crack.

There is an easy way to identify vulnerable asphalt shingles on a roof. Before an asphalt shingle cracks, it will blister, so keep this in mind when you perform a basic roof inspection. If your roof has shingles that have been compromised, the temperature on the highest floor in your home will be hotter than the temperatures in other parts of your home.
